About asdf
asdf is a version manager that allows developers to install and manage multiple runtime versions using a single command-line tool. It supports a wide range of languages and runtimes through a plugin ecosystem, including Ruby, Node.js, Python, Elixir, Erlang, and Go. The tool uses a single configuration file called .tool-versions to manage all runtime versions across projects, making it easy to share environment setups with team members. asdf also provides backwards compatibility with existing version configuration files from other tools, allowing for smooth migration.
The tool is developed by asdf-vm and is written in Go under the MIT License. It works across multiple shells including Bash, Zsh, Fish, and Elvish, with shell completions available. asdf integrates with GitHub Actions, enabling developers to use their .tool-versions configuration in CI/CD workflows. The project includes a plugin API that allows developers to add support for new tools and runtimes as needed.
