About Audacity
Audacity is a free and open-source audio editor and recorder designed for editing multiple audio tracks. Developers use it to edit, mix, and enhance audio files, supporting all major audio formats for importing and exporting. The software runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it accessible across different operating systems. It includes features like spectrogram visualization for frequency analysis and support for third-party plugins to extend functionality.
Audacity is developed by Muse Group and distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 3.0. The tool is written in C++ and offers a customizable interface alongside plugin support for VST3, Nyquist, and other formats. An optional online companion service called Audio.com provides project collaboration, versioned backups, and publishing features for users who want additional capabilities beyond the core application.
