About bpftop

bpftop is a command-line tool that displays a dynamic, real-time view of running eBPF programs on Linux systems. It shows metrics for each loaded program including average runtime per call, events per second, and estimated CPU utilization. The tool enables kernel statistics collection only while actively viewing, avoiding overhead when idle. Developers use it to monitor and optimize eBPF program performance.

bpftop is developed by jfernandez and is licensed under Apache 2.0. It is written in C and requires root access with appropriate capabilities to run. The tool supports pre-built binaries for x86_64 and aarch64 architectures and is available through various Linux package managers. It features keyboard navigation without mouse or menus, filtering and sorting by program attributes, and time-series graphs for individual programs, along with compatibility for different kernel versions through BPF iterators or procfs fallback.
