About dbt Charts
dbt Charts is an open-source tool for building dashboards using a declarative YAML language centered around SQL queries. Developers use it to create auditable, version-controlled dashboards that can be defined alongside dbt models in the same repository and pull requests. The tool is designed to work with AI agents for dashboard generation while remaining readable and reviewable by humans, and it supports validation of dashboard structure and queries against dbt models or data warehouses.
dbt Charts is developed by dbt-labs and released under the Apache 2.0 license. The platform offers both an open-source language that runs locally and a collaborative cloud platform for sharing and managing dashboards. Dashboards are declared as YAML files containing queries, chart specifications, and layouts, allowing the same board to run on a developer's laptop, in continuous integration pipelines, and on the hosted platform.
