About Emacs

Emacs is an extensible and customizable text editor built around an interpreter for Emacs Lisp, a dialect of Lisp designed for text editing tasks. The tool offers content-aware editing modes with syntax highlighting, full Unicode support, and complete built-in documentation. Beyond basic text editing, it provides functionality including a project planner, mail and news reader, debugger interface, calendar, and IRC client. A packaging system allows users to download and install extensions to expand capabilities. The editor is highly customizable through Emacs Lisp code or a graphical interface.

Emacs is developed by the GNU Project and runs on BSD, Microsoft Windows, and macOS platforms. The tool is free and open-source software, reflecting its alignment with free software principles. Its extensibility through Lisp programming makes it adaptable to various workflows and preferences. The built-in tutorial and documentation support new users in learning the editor's features and capabilities.
