About Fortran
Fortran is a high-performance programming language designed for computationally intensive applications in science and engineering. It is statically and strongly typed, allowing compilers to catch errors early and generate efficient code. The language supports multiple programming styles including imperative, procedural, array-oriented, object-oriented, and functional approaches. Fortran includes built-in support for parallel programming through coarrays, teams, events, and collective subroutines, enabling code to run on single CPUs, multicore systems, or distributed-memory high-performance computing environments. It offers standardized C interoperability for integration with multi-language projects.
The language is mature and actively maintained, with multiple open-source and proprietary compilers available. The Standard Library and Fortran Package Manager are ongoing community projects. Fortran is widely used in domains such as numerical weather prediction, ocean modeling, computational fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, and statistics. The developer is fortran-lang, and the language is licensed under MIT.
