About fq

fq is a tool, language, and set of decoders for working with binary formats and data. Developers use it to decode, query, and analyze binary files through a command-line interface. It behaves similarly to jq but operates on binary data instead of JSON, offering features like a structural hex viewer, nested format decoding, bit-level operations, and an interactive REPL with auto-completion. The tool supports a wide range of formats including media files, network protocols, encodings, and serialization formats.

fq was developed by wader and is written in Go. The tool provides both command-line usage for batch operations and an interactive mode for exploring binary data, making it suitable for tasks ranging from basic inspection to complex binary data manipulation and analysis.
