About LLVM
LLVM is a collection of modular compiler and toolchain technologies that provides infrastructure for building programming language tools. It includes libraries for optimization and code generation, as well as subprojects like Clang for C, C++, and Objective-C compilation, Flang for Fortran, and LLDB for debugging. The project enables developers to create new programming languages or port existing compilers by leveraging LLVM as an optimizer and code generator. LLVM is developed by Chris Lattner, Craig Topper, and Simon Pilgrim. It runs on FreeBSD, Linux, Microsoft Windows, OpenBSD, illumos, MINIX 3, and as a cross-platform tool. The project is written in C, C++, and assembly language.
LLVM is licensed under the Apache License with LLVM Exceptions and the University of Illinois/NCSA Open Source License. The project began as research aimed at creating a modern, SSA-based compilation strategy that could support both static and dynamic compilation of arbitrary programming languages. Today it is used in production by commercial and open source projects as well as in academic research.
