About mypy

Mypy is a static type checker for Python that allows developers to add optional type annotations to their code and catch type errors during development rather than at runtime. It enables combining dynamic and static typing within the same program, supporting gradual migration of existing codebases to static typing. Mypy checks programs using type annotations that follow Python Enhancement Proposal 484 and includes features such as type inference, generics, callable types, and abstract base classes.

Developed by Jukka Lehtosalo, mypy is released under the MIT License. The tool runs on standard Python programs with no additional runtime overhead and integrates with many common Python libraries through type stubs that define their interfaces. Developers can use mypy to improve code maintainability and reduce debugging effort by making type information explicit and machine-checked.
