About Neo4j
Neo4j is a graph database designed to store and query data organized as networks of interconnected entities and their relationships. Developers use it to represent complex data models where connections between data points are as important as the data itself, such as social networks, recommendation systems, knowledge graphs, and organizational hierarchies. The database includes a specialized query language built for traversing and analyzing these relationship patterns efficiently.
Neo4j is written in Java and Scala. The software is distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 3.0, making it open source. The graph database approach allows developers to model domains naturally as networks of nodes connected by relationships, rather than flattening data into tables, which can be beneficial for applications where relationship traversal is a core requirement.
