About Pensieve
Pensieve is a local code indexing tool that provides semantic and lexical search capabilities for developers and AI coding agents. It organizes code context by gathering tasks, files, and agent sessions into context cards that can be shared and resumed. The tool integrates with AI agents through an MCP server, allowing agents to query the index for relevant code passages instead of using traditional grep, which reduces token usage and improves agent efficiency.
Developed by TedHaley, Pensieve is available as a free Mac app and is distributed under the MIT license. The tool reads information from external services like Jira, Linear, and Slack through MCP servers, and works with various coding agents including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and others. Being local-first and open source, it runs on the user's machine while maintaining a persistent record of code context and task threads over time.

- Local code index for coding agents: Pensieve vs Graphicle vs plain ripgrep
Pensieve cuts an agent's search calls 43% and Graphicle ties plain Claude Code, both by their own tests. Neither cut tokens reliably, October 2026.
