About pipx

pipx is a tool for installing and running Python command-line applications in isolated virtual environments. Each application installed with pipx gets its own environment, preventing dependency conflicts between tools and ensuring clean uninstalls. Developers use pipx to manage Python-based CLI tools without affecting their system Python or other applications. The tool can fetch packages from PyPI or other sources that pip supports, including local directories, wheels, and git repositories. Any Python package with console script entry points can be installed and run through pipx.

pipx is developed by mitsuhiko and released under the MIT License. It uses uv when available and falls back to pip otherwise. The tool can install applications persistently on a system or run them temporarily in throwaway environments without prior installation. Developers can list, upgrade, and uninstall managed applications, and configure paths and shell completions for installed tools.
