About pre-commit

pre-commit is a framework for managing and maintaining multi-language Git pre-commit hooks. Developers use it to automatically run checks and fixes on code before each commit, catching issues like missing semicolons, trailing whitespace, and debug statements before code review. The tool acts as a package manager for pre-commit hooks, allowing developers to specify which hooks they want and letting pre-commit handle their installation and execution regardless of what programming language the hooks are written in. This eliminates the need to manually copy and maintain hook scripts across multiple projects.

The framework is designed to work without requiring root access and can automatically download and set up dependencies as needed, even for languages not installed on a developer's machine. For example, developers working on JavaScript projects can use linters written in other languages without adding those language dependencies to their projects. pre-commit is developed by pre-commit and distributed under the MIT License.
