About Restate
Restate is a runtime platform designed to help developers build applications that automatically handle infrastructure failures and maintain consistency without requiring deep expertise in distributed systems. Developers use it to create resilient backends, AI agents, and workflows by writing standard code while Restate manages resilience, state management, and reliable communication across services. The platform handles durable execution by storing completed steps and resuming from failure points, maintains state with strong consistency guarantees, and provides exactly-once semantics for service calls.
The platform supports multiple use cases including coordinating AI agents with reliable tool usage, building approval workflows and multi-step operations, orchestrating calls across microservices with automatic retries, and processing events with guaranteed delivery. Restate is developed by restatedev and is built in Rust. The platform can run in managed Restate Cloud environments or in your own cloud account and VPC through Restate BYOC, allowing developers to choose their hosting and operational preferences.
