About Sops

Sops is a tool for managing secrets in configuration files and environments. It encrypts sensitive values and comments in configuration files while keeping the overall structure readable, supporting YAML, JSON, INI, and DotEnv formats. Access to encrypted files is controlled through cryptographic identities, and users can require multiple identities together to decrypt a file. The tool works both offline using Age or PGP/GnuPG, and online through cloud key management systems including AWS KMS, Google Cloud KMS, Azure KMS, and HashiCorp Vault. Values are encrypted using AES256 in GCM mode.

Sops is developed by getsops and written in Go. It is licensed under the MPL 2.0 license. The tool is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project and can be used in cloud infrastructure as well as locally for disaster recovery purposes.
