About uv
uv is a Python package and project manager built in Rust that handles dependency management, environment setup, and Python installation. Developers use it to replace multiple separate tools - including pip, pip-tools, pipx, poetry, pyenv, twine, and virtualenv - with a single unified interface. The tool supports lockfiles, workspaces, and running scripts with inline dependency specifications. It also manages Python versions and can run tools published as Python packages. uv runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Astral, the developer of Ruff, maintains uv and releases it under dual licensing: the Apache Software License and the MIT License. The tool is written in Rust and can be installed via a standalone installer, pip, Homebrew, or other package managers without requiring Rust or Python preinstalled. It includes a pip-compatible interface to provide a familiar command-line experience while offering performance improvements over traditional Python packaging tools.
