Claude Code alternatives: add Codex first, and the three agents that replace it

Claude Code alternatives: add Codex first, and the three agents that replace it

As of 3 November 2026, three agents can replace Claude Code outright: OpenAI's Codex CLI, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot CLI. Most Claude Code users I can see do not replace it. Of the 8 real members who list Claude Code on Stackness, 5 run another coding agent or AI editor next to it, and the one who ended it moved to Codex the same month (data sources).

So my pick for anyone typing "claude code alternatives" is to add Codex CLI next to Claude Code before cancelling anything. It comes with a $20 ChatGPT Plus plan, it is open source, and OpenAI ships an official plugin that runs it from inside Claude Code. Leave only if you're not satisfied with the service or quality, or if you don't agree with Anthropic's policy. The option weaker than its reputation is Gemini CLI: DigitalOcean's list of Claude Code alternatives still ranks it first, but Google stopped serving individual accounts on it on 18 June 2026.

Claude Code users on Stackness add a second agent instead of leaving

Claude Code users on Stackness mostly keep it and add a second tool. As of 3 November 2026, 8 real accounts list Claude Code in their public stack. 5 of them list another coding agent or AI editor beside it, Cursor most often, and 3 list nothing else. Only one account has ended Claude Code, and it started Codex in the same month.

I am one of the eight. I ended Cursor and started Claude Code in November 2025, and added Codex in July 2026; both are still in my stack. Across the whole site, 15 real members list a coding agent or editor, and 6 of them list two or more coding agents or AI editors. These are small numbers from public stacks with the bot accounts removed, and they move every time one person edits a profile.

The larger surveys point the same way without measuring it directly. In the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026, 79.6% of 11,919 respondents use two or more AI tools in a typical week, though that counts chatbots and AI search too. JetBrains' 2026 agent adoption research found 39% of developers use Claude Code at work and 31% call it their most used tool, so about one Claude Code user in five has something else as the main tool. Neither publishes how many Claude Code users run a second coding agent; the Stackness count above is the only direct number I know of. The AI coding tools developers list on Stackness show the rest of the pairings.

OpenAI and xAI ship plugins that run their agents inside Claude Code

The vendors build for side-by-side use too. OpenAI's codex-plugin-cc, Apache-2.0 and created on 30 March 2026, adds Codex commands to Claude Code: /codex:review, /codex:adversarial-review, /codex:rescue and /codex:transfer. Its README says "Use Codex from inside Claude Code for code reviews or to delegate tasks to Codex". Its README says it needs a ChatGPT subscription, the free one included, or an OpenAI API key.

xAI ships the same kind of bridge for Grok Build: grok-build-plugin-cc "delegates reviews, rescue tasks, and session transfer to the Grok Build CLI". GitHub's Copilot Pro+ and Max plans include delegating work to third-party Claude and Codex agents. Zed lists Claude, Codex and OpenCode among its external agents, run over the Agent Client Protocol. None of the pages ranking for this query mentions the two plugins or Copilot's delegation; only Zapier's list notes that Devin Desktop hosts Codex, Claude Agent and OpenCode over the same protocol.

How the options were chosen

An option made the list when it takes a whole multi-step task in the terminal the way Claude Code does, ships today and can be paid for by one developer. I read each project's own repository, docs and pricing page on 3 November 2026, plus the ranking pages and the r/ClaudeCode threads on the query.

Left out, and why:

  • App builders that make a whole app from a prompt. They answer a different job, though some ranking pages fill half their lists with them.

  • Aider. The last release on PyPI, aider-chat 0.86.2, came out on 12 February 2026, and every competing page that lists it still presents it as active.

  • Grok Build. Its CLI page says it is "Available to try for Free", and the sources I read disagree on what it costs after that, from a $30 plan to $300. I cannot rank a price I cannot pin down.

  • Editors and editor extensions: Cursor, Windsurf (now named Devin Desktop), Zed and Cline. They are where people run an agent, often Claude Code itself, rather than a replacement for one. Cursor now bills Claude models at API list price on top of its plan, which the Cursor alternatives post covers.

Three agents replace Claude Code outright as of November 2026

Three terminal agents can take over Claude Code's job for an individual developer as of 3 November 2026: Codex CLI, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot CLI. Codex ranks first because it costs the same as Claude Pro and plugs into Claude Code; OpenCode second, for model choice; Copilot CLI third, as the cheapest way to keep Claude models without an Anthropic plan.

For reference, Claude Code itself comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month, Max at $100 for five times Pro's usage, and the plan once called Max 20x, now Ultra at $200 with ten times Pro's weekly usage and no five-hour limit for verified accounts. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code.

1. Codex CLI

Apache-2.0 | terminal, IDE extension, desktop app and cloud | OpenAI models, and local ones with --oss | the CLI is included in ChatGPT plans from Plus at $20, while Free and Go get the desktop app "subject to rollout" | rust-v0.166.0, 29 October 2026.

Codex is first because it is the cheapest move for someone at Claude Pro's limits: the same $20 buys a second pool of usage on a different model family, and the plugin above lets Claude Code hand it a review or a stuck task. OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local GPT-6.1 Sol messages per five hours on Plus, and says weekly limits may also apply. It runs OpenAI models by default and local models through Ollama or LM Studio with --oss, but no Claude. In XDA's test of 28 October, one run of the same task, Codex passed 6 of 6 checks in 2 minutes 42 seconds and Claude Code 6 of 6 in 2 minutes 14 seconds.

2. OpenCode

MIT | terminal, desktop app and IDE extension | 75+ providers and local models through Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp | free with your own keys, or sign in with ChatGPT Plus or Pro or GitHub Copilot | v2.2.5, 30 October 2026.

OpenCode is the pick for anyone who wants off a single vendor: one harness, any model, open source, and 2 of the 8 Claude Code members on Stackness already run it beside Claude Code. It cannot use a Claude subscription. Its docs say "Anthropic explicitly prohibits this", and the plugin that allowed it was removed in pull request #18186, titled "anthropic legal requests" and merged on 19 March 2026, before v1.3.0 shipped on 22 March. Claude in OpenCode now means an Anthropic API key at API prices. XDA ran it on a local Qwen model rather than a frontier one, and it passed 4 of 6 checks.

3. GitHub Copilot CLI

Proprietary | terminal, plus Copilot in the IDE and the cloud agent | Claude, GPT, Gemini and others | Pro at $10 with $15 of monthly credit, Pro+ at $39 with $70, where one credit is one cent | v1.0.105, 28 October 2026.

Copilot CLI is the way to keep Claude Opus and Sonnet in a terminal agent without an Anthropic plan, and the only one of the three that bundles them into a flat monthly plan. The credits are spent at the model vendor's list prices, and GitHub says part of each pool is flex credit that can change, so a heavy Opus month empties Pro+ faster than a Claude plan would. It ranks third because the harness is GitHub's and the bill is metered.

Gemini CLI, still first on DigitalOcean's list

Gemini CLI is the option whose reputation has aged worst. DigitalOcean's list of Claude Code alternatives still puts it first for a free tier of 1,000 requests a day. That tier ended on 18 June 2026, when Gemini CLI stopped serving free and Google AI Pro and Ultra individual accounts.

Gemini CLI still has real strengths: it is Apache-2.0, has 108,700 GitHub stars and shipped v0.66.0 on 27 October. But its README now opens with "No free tier or Google AI plans", and Google's transition post of 19 May says it keeps working only through paid Gemini API keys and Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licences. Individuals were moved to Google Antigravity's CLI, whose repository has no licence and no source code, whose plans page promises free users "A meaningful quota, refreshed weekly" with no number, and whose free-tier Claude models are listed as removed on 18 November 2026. For a team already on Code Assist Enterprise, Gemini CLI is still a fine agent. A developer leaving Claude Code alone can run it only on a paid Gemini API key, billed per token, with no plan to sign up for.

The case for leaving Claude Code instead of adding to it

The best argument against my pick is that 8 members is an anecdote, one of them is me, and a developer leaving over price wants a smaller bill, not a second plan and a second tool to learn. Two agents split habits, config files and context. In the Stack Overflow survey, two in three respondents switched at least one AI tool in the past year.

That case holds for someone with a reason to leave Anthropic: unhappy with the service or the quality, at odds with its policy, or on a budget that cannot carry $20 more. For the more common reader, at Claude Pro's limits and happy with the model, the numbers favour adding. Claude Pro plus ChatGPT Plus is $40 a month, against $100 for Max. The same switching question puts lower cost at 6.4% and a tool that was too expensive or limited at 3.3% as the main reason for switching, under 10% together, while better output quality leads at 25.1%. And the top comment in the r/ClaudeCode thread that ranks for this query, from March, pays $20 for Claude and $20 for ChatGPT and reports never hitting the ChatGPT limit in three months.

I would be wrong if the next measure, on 30 November 2026, shows real Claude Code members ending it for another agent faster than they add one beside it, or if a survey with a cross-tab shows most Claude Code users running it alone. The switching series found no recorded switch at all in September; there are now two, and that count is what I will watch.

Which one for which developer

Which Claude Code alternative fits depends on why you're looking. Most developers at Claude Pro's limits who like the model should keep Claude Code and add Codex CLI. Someone who wants any model picks OpenCode, someone who wants Claude without Anthropic's plans picks GitHub Copilot CLI, and a Google Cloud team stays on Gemini CLI.

  • At Claude Pro's limits and happy with Claude: add Codex CLI on ChatGPT Plus.

  • Want any model, or local ones: OpenCode, with your own keys or a ChatGPT or Copilot sign-in.

  • Want Claude models without an Anthropic plan: GitHub Copilot CLI on Pro+.

  • On a team with Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise: Gemini CLI.

  • Want to keep Claude Code and pay another model vendor: point it at another provider with a few environment variables, and read what breaks first.

The default for most people is the first line: keep Claude Code and add Codex.

Claude Code alternatives in brief

Four facts settle most Claude Code alternative questions as of 3 November 2026: no other agent may use a Claude subscription, three of the options are open source, two have a free way into the terminal agent, and two run local models. Each is sourced below.

  • Can another agent use my Claude subscription? No. Anthropic's legal and compliance page says third-party developers may not "route requests through Free, Pro, Max, or Ultra plan credentials on behalf of their users". Copilot and Cursor sell Claude through their own credits.

  • Which ones are open source? Codex CLI (Apache-2.0), OpenCode (MIT) and Gemini CLI (Apache-2.0). Claude Code, Copilot CLI and Antigravity CLI are proprietary.

  • Is there a free one? OpenCode with your own keys or a local model, and Copilot Free, which includes Copilot CLI with limited agent usage. ChatGPT Free gets the Codex desktop app where it has rolled out, not the CLI.

  • Which ones run local models? OpenCode, through Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp, and Codex CLI with --oss, through Ollama or LM Studio.
